Hong Kong Gentlemen VS Parvenus from China Mainland
![]() |
| A Hong Kong local magazine called travellers from China mainland grasshoppers |
By using "parvenu" this word in the title, it isn't derogatory here. As a self-taught English leaner, I am really unable to find a word from my vocabulary to describe some Chinese who now can afford to travelling and shopping in Hong Kong.
The relation between Hong Kong residents and China mainland travellers becomes more intense only within the latest two or three years with more Chinese becoming rich and fond of travelling. The reasons for these conflicts lie in the different ways of thinking and behaving.
Peeing on the Hong Kong street
It is commonplace in China mainland for parents letting children peeing anywhere convenient, which really pisses Hong Kong residents off. Almost all the online debates are caused by this kind of reports. Furthermore, this Chinese bad manner annoys not only Hong Kong but also other regions such as Canada. Besides peeing on the street, Hong Kong residents are unsatisfied with other China mainland bad manners:
Eating in the subway
Talking loudly in public places
Throw rubbish everywhere
Butting in line
Spitting and so on.
In addition, local people in Hong Kong believe that parvenus from China mainland should be blamed for the surging prices of houses. Similar reports of the Chinese rich pushing house prices on a higher level in many countries can be found on newspapers. As mainland Chinese, I feel that Hong Kong residents have some kind of priority over us.
There are some other political reasons for Hong Kong residents revolting travellers from Chian mainland.
How mainland Chinese think of Hong Kong?
For some historical reasons, Chinese people are now demanding more respects from other countries and it is easy to hurt their pride and feelings. So some Chinese may overreact towards Hong Kong residents' criticism. Ordinary Chinese hold the opinion that Hong Kong should show some respect and gratitude, for China mainland supplies fresh water, meat and vegetables. In addition, through travellers from China mainland buying service and goods, it helps Hong Kong keep prosperous.
In the end, the conflicts between Hong Kong local people and travellers from China mainland are inevitable but not the unsolvable problems and they are just contemporary. It would be a win-win situation if we handle this carefully.
